Is There A Commissioned Salesman Sitting on my Sofa?and, if so, How Will This Affect my Purchase? |
It’s easy to spot a commissioned salesman when you have the facts:
Just a few facts to help you to try to differentiate between a commissioned salesman and a company representative who will actually care how the sale progresses from the moment the order is signed, to installation and beyond. There is a massive difference!
Commission salesmen are not employees and are, therefore, not salaried, they receive no holiday pay, no statutory sick pay, they will not be included within the company pension scheme and cannot claim mileage or telephone expenses. Their income is solely derived from earning commission from what they sell. Their motivation is basically to sell at the highest possible price they can achieve. Customer care is certainly not paramount on their list of priorities. To get the deal is all that matters.
Unfortunately, some people do get ripped off totally by accepting the first price quoted which could be in the region of 67% over-priced.
Because of the commission salesman’s motivation, it’s hardly surprising that a whole range of tactics will be used to close the deal.
“If we decide to invite a double glazing company's salesman round to our house to price up for something why do they always start at one price and the longer they stay in the house the cheaper it becomes?”
The answer is because the company will be using commissioned salesmen. The bottom line to which a commissioned salesman can reduce the price – and still make a bit of money on the deal - is in the region of 67% of the original asking price. For example, if a salesman tries to sell some windows at the asking price of £4,000 – they know that they can reduce the price by up to, say, £2,680. If they sell you the windows at £1,320 then they will not be making very much money at all on the deal – maybe nothing at all. However, if they sell the windows at the asking price of £4,000 then they will have had a very good earner – thank you very much!
Can I trust a commissioned salesman?
Do not forget that the commissioned salesman’s sole aim is to get the deal no matter what. It’s in his interest to tell you anything you want to hear:
“Yes, your conservatory can be built before you go on holiday in four weeks’ time”
“There’s no need for the window fitters to come inside your house”
"Sign up today and you will be given our Company’s “preferential service” and your order will go to the front of the queue”
”I will personally oversee your project”
“To keep the cost of your windows at a price that you can afford – if you pay a cash deposit then you won’t have to pay the VAT”
He will agree with anything you want to ask –
“No problem –we can do this”, ”No problem, we can do that”, etc. etc.
Do not trust a salesman who offers the “CASH” deal because how do you know the cash deposit you’ve paid in good faith will go to the Company and not in the commission salesman’s bank account.
Do not trust a salesman that runs down and pours scorn on a rival company – this is totally unprofessional – he should be presenting the merits of his own company and the products he’s selling – he should never make disparaging remarks about his competitors.
You can, however, trust a representative of a Company who has an extensive knowledge of the products he is selling, actual delivery dates, and actual fitting dates, someone who offers you the facts – not someone who is just agreeing with everything you ask just to get you to sign up there and then.
Bearing in mind the above – it’s just ain’t right. How do they sleep at night? This is the reason why we made the bold decision to be totally upfront about our prices - we spent a great deal of time pricing up a huge range of windows, doors and conservatories which are published on our sales literature and here on our website – commissioned salesmen CANNOT AND WILL NOT feature within Vantage – FACT!
